Effective delegation

Who's got the monkey?

Abstract: Based on the famous work, "Management time:  Who's got the monkey?" presupposes that "the first order of business is for the manager to enlarge his discretionary time by eliminating subordinate-imposed time." Monkeys are an analogy that underscores the value of assigning, delegating, and controlling.

Successful leadership pivots on the manager's ability to control their own time, to delegate, and to encourage team members to take greater initiative.

We need to ask ourselves:
1. Where is the monkey?
2. Who is working for whom?
3. How to get rid of the monkeys?
4. How to transfer initiative?

The first order of business is for the manager to get back his or her time from the monkeys.

The second order of business is for him or her to grow his or her team members' initiative.

The last order of business is for him or her to use this time gained from having gained control of the "monkeys" to more value.
